Literacy as Personal
    • Describe Your Picture.
    • What is Happening in your picture?
    • Why did you create a picture Of this?
    • What does this picture Tell us about your life/this activity?
    • How can this picture provide Opportunities for us to expand access to your activity?
  • In pairs: Show each picture and read your transcript out loud. Partners look, listen and asks any clarifying questions. Discussion always comes back to the story and meanings of the photos. Use dialogue to spiral deeper in/ down.
  • Individually: Take another look. Thoughtfully edit, revise, and add to your notes. It might be helpful to use different color ink or pencil for additions and changes. Add a title or hashtag if time.
  • In Whole Group: walk around to view the posted pictures and themes. On the blank paper in different colors, add observations: What else do you “see” in the photos or from the themes, issues, and theories? What patterns are you seeing? What connections are you making?
  • Large Group Discussion:
    • What: What are the pictures telling us about the phenomenon of our personal literacies? [might be things like these are things we enjoy because we have chosen them, the relationship between these activites and the available time in our lives, maybe that they were started when we were young or maybe they emerged from needing some sort of solace in our life or inspired by someone we look up to), what the process of learning the activity was like
    • So What: How can this inform our understandings and definition of literacy? What are you learning and realizing about the process of Photovoice?
Now What: What would you tell someone who is trying to become literate in your discourse community? What do you understand about your discourse community?

MLED 530 Week 1

Welcome back everyone! This semester we will be exploring different definitions of literacy and what that means for our content areas. In preparation for the work we will be doing to expand our understanding, I’d like you to read  Wang's article about a participatory action research strategy called Photovoice. This article describes a project about women’s health issues, but we will be using it as a way to explore literacy.

To help get the conversation about literacy started, please also read one of the following articles:
-Gabriel & Wenz

After reading, please write your response in a comment below.

  • One quote from each text that intrigued you, explain why
  • One connection to your teaching
  • One question you have about the process of Photovoice, the different ideas about literacy, etc
These will be due for our first class on Aug. 25. Please read your classmates' responses as they will inform our discussion in class.
